As the Philippine educational system grappled with the challenges brought by the rapid advancement of technology, the Department of Education (DepEd) recognized Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as an essential tool to equip learners with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in a globalized world. To address this, various innovative strategies have been implemented to create an ICT-enabled education system—one that transforms students into dynamic, lifelong learners, and values-centered, productive, and responsible citizens.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting health precautions of the “new normal,” ICT became even more crucial. It played a key role in reshaping teaching and learning, enabling education to take place anytime and anywhere.
In response, DepEd enhanced digital and technical infrastructure to support effective solutions for learning continuity during school closures. The use of video conferencing tools and learning management systems (LMS) increased significantly, enabling virtual classrooms to serve as the primary venues for instruction. Online learning emerged as a vital approach to ensure the continuity of education.
However, to fully support and sustain this shift, there remains a pressing need for digital platforms and tools tailored to the new normal. This underscores the importance of providing digital content and instructional resources—particularly for Senior High School, TLE, and EPP teachers—to ensure effective instructional delivery and skill development.
To address this need, the Schools Division Office of Isabela, through its Human Resource Development Division and Curriculum and Instruction Division, launched an initiative to align curriculum and instruction methods for SHS, TLE, and EPP teachers. This initiative focuses on the integration of digital content and instructional practices.
In support of this, Alicia Vocational School, through its SLAC proponent, conducted a School-Based Learning Action Cell (SLAC) session titled "Integrating Contextualized Digital Content into Classroom Instruction."
The session began with Mr. Michael S. Martinez, the moderator, introducing Ms. Maricris V. Dictado, who led the singing of the Makabayan Song, followed by a prayer led by Mr. Antonio Podes, Jr. Afterward, Mr. Martinez called on Mrs. Jane Buenafe and Mrs. Josephine M. Ventura to deliver their inspirational and welcome messages to the participants.
The SLAC proper then commenced with Mr. Martinez introducing Mr. Mark R. Claravall, the SLAC proponent and facilitator. He presented the purpose of the session: to cascade the 2022 Division LAC Sessions on Digital Content and Instruction for SHS, TLE, and EPP Teachers, with the goal of aligning instructional standards and promoting interactivity, adaptability, and meaningful use of digital content to enhance classroom learning.
To engage participants, the session began with a guessing game using ClassPoint.app, where correct responders were awarded ₱20.00 load as a prize. The lecture continued with the presentation of terminal and enabling objectives, followed by a discussion on the fundamental question: What is digital content?
The facilitator posed reflective questions such as:
How do I integrate digital content into my classroom instruction?
What is the current teaching scenario?
Who are involved?
Where and when do I start?
Why is it important?
How can I do it effectively?
The lecture moved on to appreciating the value of digital content and its benefits for learners, parents, and teachers. To encourage participation, the facilitator used “The Hat” app to randomly select participants to share how they integrate digital content in their own classes.
The discussion expanded to cover key concepts including:
The framework of the 21st Century Digital Citizen
Digital Curriculum and Digital Learning
Digital/Electronic Devices
Digital Instructional Materials and Learning Resources
Key Functions and Deliverables
Practicing Digital Content
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy
Class Digital Content Best Practices and Learner Outputs
The session also featured a motivational reading of “I Am a Digital Learner” to inspire commitment to digital integration.
Before the session concluded, Mr. Claravall demonstrated the use of several digital applications for creating personalized digital content, such as Crossword Puzzle and Word Search generators.
Following the lecture, certificates were awarded to the participants and the working committee. The SLAC session concluded with closing remarks delivered by Mr. Ronald M. Mactal.
Impact on Teachers and Learners
This SLAC session on Integrating Contextualized Digital Content into Classroom Instruction made a significant impact on both teachers and learners. By equipping educators with practical tools, strategies, and a deeper understanding of digital integration, the session empowered them to become more innovative and responsive in their teaching practices.
Teachers gained confidence in using digital platforms and content creation tools that make lessons more interactive, inclusive, and learner-centered. The collaborative sharing of best practices not only deepened professional learning but also fostered a community of digitally competent educators ready to face the demands of 21st-century instruction.
For learners, this initiative ensures that classroom instruction is no longer limited to traditional methods. Instead, they are exposed to enriched, engaging, and technology-supported learning experiences that develop critical thinking, creativity, and digital literacy. Through this transformation, students are better prepared to become globally competitive, responsible digital citizens.
The SLAC initiative did not just deliver content—it ignited change. It marked a shift in mindset, from passive content delivery to dynamic, purposeful digital instruction. As Alicia Vocational School continues to champion this digital transformation, the long-term impact will be evident in more empowered teachers and more capable, future-ready learners.
